Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is a moment of changing the period from childhood to adulthood where at this moment adolescents are faced with various transformations both physically and behaviorally such as the formation of self-concept in adolescents. One of the factors associated with adolescent self-concept is hate speech. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hate speech and self-concept in adolescents at SMA Negeri 3 Kota Sukabumi.

Method: Correlational research with cross sectional approach. The population was all adolescents at SMAN 3 Kota Sukabumi with a sample of 280 respondents. Instruments of both variables refer to Likert scale which is valid and reliable. Sampling used proportional random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaire and statistical analysis using Chi-Square (ꭓ2).

Result: The results showed that most of the respondents had received high hate speech and had a poor self-concept. There was a relationship between hate speech and self-concept in adolescents at SMA Negri 3 Sukabumi with a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05).

Conclusion: There is a relationship between hate speech and self-concept among adolescents in SMA Negri 3 Sukabumi.
